The Chester Area
With its origins during the reign of Roman Emperor Vespasian in AD79, the settlement grew over the centuries, and was granted city status in 1541, further developing into the classic modern city you visit today. Chester is one of the best preserved walled cities in Britain, and within its medieval walls can be found well preserved medieval architecture, supplemented by Victorian restorations, with the distinctive black and white buildings, all adding to its vibrant atmosphere.
Roman Chester
The legacy of its Roman roots can still be found in Chester, then known as Deva, can be seen to this day. Lower sections of the northern city wall are Roman in origin and the basements of a number buildings still contain Roman remains. Many of the Roman finds, including a reconstructed hypocaust system, are on display outside the city wall, from Newgate to the River Dee. The Grosvenor museum also houses a collection of Roman relics, and there is a Roman amphitheatre just outside the city walls which is the focus of current archaeological investigations. Chester is well worth exploring for its Roman history alone and Chester Minibus/ Coach Company can help you on your way.
Medieval Chester
A walk around the city walls (about 2 miles) is a fine way to explore Medieval Chester. The Agricola Tower at Chester Castle is well worth a visit, and of course you can’t visit Chester and not call in at its vibrant heart: the Rows. The Rows or Galleries are Medieval in origin and are rows of 2 tier shops, unique in Britain, restored by the Victorians and home to what is believed to be the oldest shop in England.
Running to the south of the city is the River Dee with its 11th century weir and its 13th century Old Dee Bridge. Again by the River Dee, the Roodee is an area at the South West of the city, between the City Walls and the River Dee, where you can find Chester Racecourse. Holding horse races since 1540, the racecourse holds regular meetings to this day. Why not enjoy a day at the races with us!
Modern Chester
With a branch of the Shropshire Union Canal, and well served by road, river and rail, Chester prospered and today can offer all you need for a memorable day: extensive shopping facilities, river cruises, arts and cultural programmes, music and sports events, and the famous Chester Zoo.
